512 Voices (for Soprano)

by Zach Layton

/

about

512 Voices is a composition by composer Zach Layton, featuring soprano Amelia Watkins utilizing an innovative wavefield synthesis loudspeaker array in 496 discrete channels, currently in development at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) in Troy, NY. Wavefield synthesis is a spatial audio reproduction technique enabling the perception of precise positioning and dynamic shaping of sound sources in virtual auditory space. The premiere at EMPAC featured live voice, 496 channels of processed vocals and spatialized electronic sound, and the first public performance utilizing this incredible new sound system developed by the engineering team at EMPAC. The libretto of the piece is drawn entirely from the latin names of clouds, creating a cluster of migrating phonemes that drift across the sonic terrain like the weather.
